The Center for Physical Rehabilitation's Vestibular Rehabilitation program is designed to treat patients affected by vestibular pathology and balance disorders. Common complaints include dizziness, vertigo, and loss of balance in a short period of time. A majority of patients (80-90%) can show functional benefit from balance rehabilitation.
The program is appropriate for patients diagnosed with:
- Positional vertigo, most commonly benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
- Uncompensated unilateral vestibular hypofunction
Treatment involves:
- Parnes repositioning maneuver for posterior/anterior canal BPPV
- Compensation exercises for peripheral vestibular disorders to encourage the functioning ear to take over
Comprehensive evaluation involves:
- Detailed subjective history
- Strength/Balance/Gait assessment
- Somato-sensory testing when appropriate
- Visual/vestibular reflex screening (VOR)
- Hallpike-Dix maneuver for BPPV diagnosis
- Provocation testing for home exercise prescription
