Different pains and ailments require different treatments and picking the wrong one may delay or hamper your recovery, or create new problems. There are four primary products for the prevention and treatment of pain:

Treatment for sprains and strains will depend on the extent of injury, and it is best to consult with your certified athletic trainer or healthcare professional. For mild injuries, use the P.R.I.C.E. principles
PROTECTION - If injured, stop playing and protect the injured part from further damage. Avoid putting weight on the injured part, get help moving to a safe area off the field. Protect the injured area with splints, braces or crutches if needed.
ICE - 15-20 minutes. Always apply a thin layer of protection between cold pack and injury area to prevent frostbite.
COMPRESSION - Apply a wrap starting at the point furthest from heart, decrease tightness as you move toward the heart. Wrap should be snug but not cause numbness/tingling.
ELEVATE - The heart while icing.
