Schroth Method for Scoliosis

What is the Schroth Method Therapy?

Schroth Method therapy or scoliosis-specific exercise is a three-dimensional form of treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis via conservative management. Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a curvature of the spine 10 degrees or more that begins in adolescence, usually between 10-18 years of age. AIS curves progress during the rapid growth periods, and are diagnosed by a doctor through the use of X-rays. AIS is the most common type of scoliosis.

Our Schroth-trained physical therapists have advanced training so they can customize a physical therapy program based on age, skeletal maturity, and specific spine curvature. Schroth Therapy can help stop scoliosis from progressing and lower your chance of surgery.

Goals of the Schroth Method: How it Works

The Schroth Method teaches you how to align your posture naturally, and helps strengthen the muscles that support your spine, so you can function at your best. The goals are:

  • Awareness of your posture
  • Correct posture by improving muscle strength and endurance
  • Improve breathing quality
  • Improve postural appearance
  • Decrease joint pain related to muscle imbalances from the spinal curve
  • Prevent surgery
  • Participate in physical activities and live a normal life with scoliosis
