Blood flow restriction rehabilitation is used with any individual that has significant muscle atrophy or is deconditioned. Partially restricting blood flow into an arm or leg while exercising with light weights has been shown to improve muscle size similar to lifting heavy weights. This is a great benefit for those who cannot lift heavy weights because of recent surgery or deconditioning. It can lead to faster return of strength.
Blood flow restriction is used under the care of your physical therapist. This is restricting a percentage of blood flow during specific exercises for specific repetitions and purpose.
Who would benefit from this treatment?
Post ACL reconstruction
Post surgery involving ankle, knee or elbow
Patellar tendonitis
Deconditioned individuals that lack endurance for walking, etc.
