What to Expect During Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

If you’re considering physical therapy, you might be wondering what the first appointment entails. It’s normal to feel curious—or even a little nervous—but understanding the process can help ease any concerns. At PTCPR, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Here’s what to expect during your first physical therapy appointment and answers to common questions about your care.

How To Schedule Your First Appointment at PTCPR

What Happens During Your First Physical Therapy Appointment?

Your first appointment typically lasts about 45 minutes to an hour and is all about getting to know you and your unique wellness needs. Here’s what you can expect.

Meet Your Care Team

Upon arrival, you will check in at the front desk. There is some paperwork we will ask for you to fill out, or you can do it ahead of time! From there, your care team will be notified of your arrival, and come greet you.

Your therapist will ask about your medical history, current concerns, and goals. Be prepared to discuss:

  • The nature and location of your pain or injury.
  • Activities or movements that worsen or improve your symptoms.
  • Any previous treatments or surgeries.

Physical Assessment

Your therapist will assess your movement, strength, flexibility, posture, and balance. This hands-on evaluation helps identify the root cause of your discomfort and guides the development of your personalized treatment plan.

Goal Setting and Treatment Plan

Together, you and your therapist will set realistic goals and outline the steps to achieve them. Whether it’s returning to your favorite sport or simply moving without pain, your plan will be tailored to your needs.

Education and Exercises

You’ll likely leave the first appointment with a few exercises to do at home specific to your situation. We never give cookie cutter exercises. These are designed to begin addressing your specific issues right away.

How Often Will You Need to Go to Physical Therapy?

After your initial evaluation, your therapist will recommend a treatment schedule based on your condition and goals. While it varies, most patients attend therapy 1-3 times a week. Research supports most conditions fully resolve in 10-12 visits total, thus preventing recurrence of your pain, but this is again, tailored to your unique situation.

Your progress will be reassessed regularly, and the frequency of visits may decrease as your condition or symptoms improve. In between appointments, you’ll have a home exercise program to continue making progress.

How to Tell if Physical Therapy is Working

You’ll know therapy is working when you start noticing:

  1. Reduced pain or discomfort.
  2. Improved strength, flexibility, or mobility.
  3. Easier performance of daily tasks or activities.
  4. Increased confidence in movement.

Your therapist will track your progress, but don’t hesitate to share feedback during sessions. Open communication ensures your treatment stays effective and aligned with your goals.

Will Physical Therapy Hurt?

A common concern is whether physical therapy will be painful. While you might experience some soreness during or after exercises—similar to what you’d feel after a workout—physical therapy should not cause sharp or severe pain. If it does, let your therapist know so they can adjust your treatment.
