If you are a patient attending physical therapy for low back pain, your therapist may be prescribing spinal extension stretching for you. (“Press ups” ring a bell?) Generally if you are performing spinal extension stretching your therapist has also instructed you to avoid spinal flexion like bending forward while picking things up and sitting in a rounded posture.
Typical Pilates workouts include pelvic tilting and other spinal flexion exercises. We created this video specifically for patients who need to avoid spinal flexion so they can still get the benefits of a Pilates workout.
In this workout you will focus on increasing spinal range of motion, proper muscle firing, muscle strength, and balance.
As always, please contact your physician and physical therapist before beginning this or any other workout. Roll out your mat and enjoy!
